Pitters: A Comparative Genome Analysis

IMG_20181025_195155.jpg

The concept of microbial infallibility states that if a compound exists in nature, there must be a microbe that can break it down. Agar, derived from red algae, a hetero-polymer, is no exception to this concept. Isolated thanks to a citizen science project pioneered by Elise Phillips (2018), a comparative analysis of the complete genomes of five "pitters" is currently underway in the Martin Lab! Agar degraders are know to have one of three different agarase pathways, and the comparison of these five marine samples has the potential to provide insights into the evolutionary history of these remarkable organisms.
