Mark "Doc" Martin
Principle Investigator (PI)
Mark “Doc” Martin presides over the #DocMartians in Martin’s Microbial Menagerie, and promotes #MicrobialCentrism constantly. Doc was actually born in Compton, California and raised in North Long Beach. He was just eleven years old when a friend of his brother gave him a plate of some bioluminescent bacteria, and Doc Martin was hooked. After getting a B.A. in Biology from UCLA, Doc went on to Stanford University for his PhD, studying Rhizobium meliloti. Following postdoctoral work in San Diego (on luminous bacteria and—seriously—plant biology), he worked for seven years in the biotech industry, developing undomesticated microbes with commercial properties. After getting laid off during downsizing, Doc Martin returned to academia and decided to focus on predatory bacteria. After all, his first microbiology professor, Syd Rittenberg, helped discover Bdellovibrio!

Doc lives in Tacoma with his wife Dr. Jennifer J. Quinn, and his two teenaged sons Anson and Zachary. He hopes to add a dog soon (after sabbatical).
Current #DocMartians in the Lab
Jacob Shaffer
Jacob Shaffer has been working in the Martin Lab since the fall of 2016. He initially joined the lab with an interest in tardigrades that soon developed into a love of all things microbial. Jacob’s main project is centered around the genomic analysis of five diverse agar degrading bacteria. He has a strong interest in microbial ecology, having also studied bacteria in high sulfide environments of the Puget Sound and the microbiome of the tardigrade. Outside of research, Jacob has a strong passion for biological science education, having worked as both a subject tutor and as a teaching assistant for introductory biology labs. He has also spent time tutoring students as a part of the Phi Sigma Biological Honors Society, of which he is currently serving as Chapter President. Jacob plans to pursue a doctorate in microbiology. He is looking forward to a future that will include both research and mentoring students towards a life-long love of science. In his free time, Jacob is a member of the University’s Wind Ensemble, playing the baritone saxophone, and the loving father to his dog, Kepler.
Emily Grahn
Emily started in the MØM lab her very first day of college freshman year. While the story is long, the journey ever since has made every minute worth it. She is currently pursuing a degree in Biology to shuttle her into an MD/PhD in Infectious Disease and Parasitology. Her current work is with the ever elusive Ensifer adhaerens, a predatory bacterium that has been little studied since it was first discovered in 1982. While this has posed many roadblocks, the possibilities are endless! She has known she wanted to be a Doctor in Parasitology since she was just eleven, and everything since has been done to promote that dream. Ensifer is yet another avenue down the long road of education. Currently she is trying to expand the host range of Ensifer from M. luteus to include more medically relevant bacteria. Emily loves sports, specifically hockey (she was a national player, she even sports a Canadian accent sometimes!), and loves every opportunity to do something creative… she cannot sit still sometimes, but that also matches her continuous drive and dedication to her job. Whether working in the lab or working in the health center taking vitals and running tests, nothing will stand between her and her dreams. She is so thankful for Doc and her lab family… it is truly a home away from home.
